Spending nearly 14 years living and working in Northern C alifornia I developed a hyper sensitivity to poison oak. My last major case was in the spring of 2010 when I got multiple exposures from hitting a branch that was overhanging a trial during a mountain bike race. How do I know how many laps I did? By the number of rash stripes on my left arm. Four to be exact. Resulted in a visit to the doctor and prescriptions for pills and creams for pregnant women. I was also unable to be intimate with my spouse for several weeks due to the extent of rash on my body.

Kinja'd!!!

Fast forward to this weekend. I traveled to my moms house and used a piece of luggage I have not used in a long time as I do not check bags when traveling . I can only assume that the poison oak was on the luggage.

I now have a spot on my left eye lid, one spot just under my left peck and nice rash on my stomach.

I Fucking Hate Poison Oak.

I’m hyper sensitive to ivy, and it’s EVERYWHERE even in the sub-freezing temps. At least the changing colors help it stick out from the rest of the evergreen undergrowth.

I go on trail runs about 1-2 times a week, so it’s always a contortionist adventure to be watching the ground 5-10 feet ahead, then twisting and jumping (while keeping my pace). The true measure of success is later that night, looking down at my shins and they’re all clear.

I would wear gaiters or long socks, but that just brings the oils home so I can spread them ALL OVER ME. Not making that mistake again.

I’ve been there with poison ivy. I just don’t even go places with poison oak/ivy now. Since moving to the west coast, I have managed to find nettles the hard way though.

Could be worse...you could find Devil’s Club or even a blackberry bramble  the hard way...

Nettles don’t affect me but I get blisters if I even look at poison oak.
